The Story of Balaam’s Donkey
As Israel camped near Moab, King Balak grew afraid of them. He sent for a prophet named Balaam and offered him a reward to come and curse Israel.
God warned Balaam not to curse the people, for they were blessed. But Balaam set out on his donkey anyway, and God was displeased that he went.
On the road, an angel of the LORD stood in the way with a drawn sword. Balaam could not see it, but his donkey could. Three times the donkey turned aside to avoid the angel, and three times Balaam struck her in anger.
Then God did something remarkable: he opened the donkey’s mouth, and she spoke, asking Balaam why he had beaten her three times. Balaam argued back, still not understanding what was happening.
Finally God opened Balaam’s own eyes, and he saw the angel standing in the road. Balaam realized his donkey had saved his life, and he learned he could only speak the words God gave him. In the end, he blessed Israel instead of cursing them.
