The Story of Jacob’s Ladder
Jacob left Beersheba and set out toward Haran. When the sun went down, he stopped at a certain place to rest for the night. Having nothing else, he took one of the stones there, put it under his head for a pillow, and lay down to sleep.
As he slept, Jacob dreamed. He saw a ladder set up on the earth, its top reaching all the way to heaven. On it, the angels of God were going up and coming down.
Above the ladder stood the LORD, who spoke to him. God said, I am the LORD God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. He promised to give the land where Jacob lay to him and to his descendants.
God said Jacob’s descendants would be as many as the dust of the earth, spreading out in every direction, and that through him and his offspring all the families of the earth would be blessed.
Then God gave Jacob a personal promise: I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back again to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.
Jacob woke from his sleep and said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it. He was afraid and said this was none other than the house of God and the gate of heaven.
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had used as a pillow, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. He named the place Bethel, meaning house of God, though the city had been called Luz before. He made a vow that if God would keep and provide for him, then the LORD would be his God, and he would give back a tenth of all he received.
