The Story of Joash
When Athaliah saw that her son Ahaziah was dead, she moved to secure the throne by destroying all the seed royal. She was killing her own grandchildren, and with them the line of David in Judah.
Jehosheba, daughter of king Joram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash from among the king’s sons who were being killed. She hid the baby and his nurse in a bedchamber, out of Athaliah’s reach.
He stayed hidden with her in the house of the LORD for six years while Athaliah reigned over the land. The temple staff kept a secret that would have cost them their lives, and the queen ruled a country whose true king was a toddler inside her own capital.
In the seventh year the priest Jehoiada made his move. He called in the commanders of hundreds, the captains and the guard, brought them into the house of the LORD, made a covenant with them, took an oath, and showed them the king’s son. Then he gave them detailed orders about which units would stand where, and armed them from king David’s spears and shields kept in the temple.
With the guard standing around the boy from one corner of the temple to the other, Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, gave him the testimony, anointed him and made him king. The people clapped their hands and shouted, God save the king.
Athaliah heard the noise, came into the temple, saw the boy standing by the pillar with the princes and trumpeters and the people rejoicing, and tore her clothes crying treason. Jehoiada had her taken outside rather than killed in the house of the LORD. Then the people pulled down the house of Baal and broke its altars, and Joash sat on the throne. He was seven years old when he began to reign.

What the Story of Joash Teaches Us
The account turns on people whose names are easy to skip. Jehosheba risked everything to carry one child out of a massacre, and a nurse spent six years in hiding with him. Neither of them ever holds power in the story, and without them there is no story.
Jehoiada’s plan is striking for how carefully it is built. He does not rush the boy out as soon as he can. He waits, secures sworn commitments from the men with weapons, positions every unit, and only then brings the child into the open. Protecting what matters took patience as much as courage.
The chapter also shows how thoroughly a thing can be hidden and still be true. For six years Judah looked like it had no king, and the whole time the king was in the temple. The line of David survived, in one nursery, with a handful of people keeping the secret.
