The Story of Solomon Asks for Wisdom
Solomon had recently become king of Israel after his father David. He made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married Pharaoh’s daughter. Solomon loved the LORD and walked in the ways of his father David, though at this time the people still sacrificed at high places because the temple had not yet been built.
The king went to Gibeon, which was the most important high place, to offer sacrifices there. He offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. While he was at Gibeon, the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said to him, ‘Ask what I shall give thee.’
Solomon answered by remembering God’s great kindness to his father David. He confessed that he felt like a little child, unsure how to lead. He said he was set over a vast people too numerous to count, and he asked God for an understanding heart to judge the people and to discern between good and bad.
The request pleased the Lord. Because Solomon had not asked for long life, riches, or the death of his enemies, but had asked for understanding to discern judgment, God promised him a wise and understanding heart unlike any before or after him. God also gave him what he had not asked for: riches and honor beyond any other king of his time. If Solomon would keep God’s statutes and commandments as David had, God promised to lengthen his days.
Solomon awoke and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant, offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.
Soon two women came before the king with a dispute. They lived together in one house, and each had given birth to a child within a few days of each other. One woman’s baby died in the night, and she was accused of quietly exchanging the dead child for the other woman’s living son while its mother slept. Now both women stood before the king, each insisting the living child was hers and the dead child belonged to the other.
Solomon called for a sword and ordered that the living child be divided in two, with half given to each woman. The true mother, moved with compassion for her son, begged the king to give the child to the other woman rather than kill him. But the second woman agreed that the child should be divided.
By their responses the king knew the truth. He ordered that the living child be given to the woman who had pleaded for its life, declaring her to be the mother. When all Israel heard of this judgment, they held the king in awe, because they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.
