Samuel was a young boy who ministered to the LORD under Eli the priest. In those days a clear word from God was rare, and open visions were seldom seen.
One night, before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD near the ark. Then a voice called his name.
Thinking Eli had called him, Samuel ran to the old priest and said, “Here am I.” But Eli had not called, and he sent the boy back to lie down. This happened a second and a third time, for Samuel did not yet know the LORD’s voice.
At last Eli understood that the LORD was calling the child. He told Samuel that if the voice came again, he should answer, “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.”
When the LORD called again, Samuel answered as he was told. God gave him a hard message about the house of Eli, and Samuel told Eli everything. As Samuel grew, the LORD was with him, and all Israel knew he was a prophet.
