One day Esau came in from the fields exhausted and hungry. Jacob was cooking stew, and Esau begged for a bowl. Jacob asked for Esau’s birthright in return, and Esau, thinking only of his hunger, traded away his future for a single meal.
Later, when Isaac was old and blind, he prepared to give his firstborn blessing to Esau. But Rebekah helped Jacob disguise himself with goat skins and Esau’s clothes. Jacob fooled his father and received the blessing meant for his brother.
Esau was furious, so Jacob fled to his uncle Laban far away. Along the road, Jacob dreamed of a stairway reaching to heaven, and God promised to be with him. He lived with Laban for many years, married, and grew wealthy.
At last Jacob turned home to face Esau. The night before, he wrestled with God until dawn and was given a new name, Israel. The next day the brothers met, and instead of anger, Esau ran to Jacob and embraced him with tears.
